Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Project
The Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Project (NNSDP) was established in June 1999 after a process of tribal consultation through public hearings conducted across the Navajo Nation to obtain input and the opportunity of community and health service providers on how to use the federal Diabetes funding. This was accomplished through the formation of a Navajo Area Diabetes Planning Group consisting of representations from the Navajo Nation Division of Health and Navajo Area Indian Health Services health professionals to determine distribution, methodology, and grant recipients. As a grant recipient, the Navajo Special Diabetes Project initiative is to promote healthy life-styles and develop strategies to reduce and prevent diabetes affecting the Navajo People. This initiative was incorporated into the Mission and Vision Statement of the NNSDP.
NNSDP Mission Statement: “To provide diabetes prevention/intervention services by promoting healthy lifestyle changes to reduce and prevent diabetes.”
NNSDP Vision Statement: “The Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Project envisions a life filled with beauty, harmony and happiness through diabetes prevention, education and wellness.”
